Mount Washington

Mount Washington is the highest elevation location in the eastern United States and considered home to some of the worst weather on Earth. Extreme wind is a feature. A crewed station record gust of 231 mph was observed on April 12, 1934.

Average daily temperatures

Mount Washington has a range of 14 degrees to 56 degrees for an average high temperature, and minus 5 degrees to 45 degrees as a range for lows.

Record daily temperatures

It's been as cold as minus-47 and as warm as 72 degrees on the rock pile.

Record daily precipitation

On Oct. 21, 1996 the summit recorded an astounding 10.82 inches of rain. It was due to an interaction with an upper level low and Hurricane Lili well offshore, a relatively common way to see mega rainfall totals.

Annual max and min temperatures

Mount Washington has had an annual range of 113 degrees from high to low in several years, most recently in 2023.

Winter snowfall

The 1968-1969 winter delivered an astonishing 566.4 inches of snow to Mount Washington. More than 23 feet of snow falls on average during winter.

Average monthly nice days

Visiting the summit is a popular activity. It is one of the few major mountains that you can drive to the peak of. If you're looking for a classic nice day -- 65 to 85 degrees and no rain -- you'll need some luck. It's frequently nice at the base and not so much on the top. Layers!
